For my project I chose to focus on the lesbian influencers Julie and Camilla, who create short videos about their life. The four elements of their channel that stood out to me were as follow: their wedding videos, their journey of buying and renovating a house, having an IVF/pregnancy, and their responses to hate comments.

The short video I focused on starts by responding to a hate comment. “So obviously I support your lifestyle choices and everything, but do you really have to be so damn loud about it?” in response Julie and Camilla say “yes!” The video then alternates between showing clips of their wedding day and news article clips filled with LBGTQ+ hate.

The Titles of the news articles are:

-Two more suspects arrested over LGBTQ pride shooting in Norway

-Oslo Pride organizers cancel a parade after a gunman kills 2 and wounds 10

  - Report Cities More Than 350 Anti-L.G.B.T.Q. Incidents Over 11 Months

-Rise in anti-LGBTQ hate and extremism captured in news reports

-Anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremism spiked during Pride Month 2023, report find

-Threats against the LGBTQIA+ community intensifying: Department of Homeland Security

-German LGBTQ+ activist warns over ‘worrying’ hate crime rise

-Italian far-right government limits parental rights of same-sex couples

The contrast between the love you can see radiating off of Julie and Camilla and the news articles that illistrates the hate towards the LGBTQ+ community and shows the two different schools of thoughts on whether LGBTQ+ people should have certain rights. That is why the visibility of a lesbian family is so important. Visibility allows people to see the humanity of  being lesbian and how it doesn't make you a determinant to society. Even though Julie and Camilla have faced backlash, they use their right to freedom of speech to make sure that their other rights are upheld. While the future will be messy, you have to keep standing up. By normalizing through visibility, LGBTQIA+ people will realize the inhumanity that is involved in killing people based on their identity. This video displays the fact that with every step forward for the LGBTQIA+ community, there has been resistance and hate crimes that follow.

Comments

  1. I enjoyed learning about Julie and Camilla but I was a bit confused on how this relates to the future of the LGBTQ movement. I think it would be helpful if you cited a popular video they made and how it went so viral it made people accept LGBTQ people exc. Or if their channel inspired another LGBTQ channel to be made.
